Aha! Inspiration!

Nothing could be finer...

Nothing could be finer...

I recently returned from five glorious days in Charleston, South Carolina…my first trip back  since moving to New York nine months ago.  As soon as I stepped into the Charleston airport, I knew I had returned to a totally different world (cue crickets, pins dropping, and other things you only hear when it’s really, really quiet)…a slower and quieter world where  the humidity wraps around you like a big bear hug.  A big bear hug that turns your recently straightened hair into a lion’s mane and your previously stylish bangs into something straight off the set of Saved By the Bell.  Ahhh, the South.

Though I had a little business to attend to, most of the trip’s motivations were selfish- to reconnect to dear friends and soak in the beautiful surroundings that part of my heart yearns for every day. The overwhelming beauty and history of the city of Charleston, my home for five years, has been a  rather significant influence on my work and continues to be despite my separation from it.   If you’ve never been (go!), it’s hard to explain its charm…so here are some of my favorite shots from the week and a first look at my direction for Spring ‘10.

Layers are delicious!

Layers are delicious!

Layers and textures! I am such a sucker for all things textured and anything shiny! I love how all the different layers of paint peek through each other here. There’s just something so interesting about things with such an obvious history to them. Things don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful…thank goodness!

The other thing I like about this is the rather artsy, almost watercolor feeling.  Yes, I am comparing paint to paint here…I think that my constant sketching and my art background are sneaking their way into my work in a more literal way, but more to come on that later.

A bit more...

A bit more...

I’m really feeling the soft color palette seen here…a subtle pinky blush,  a bit of fresh green, and my long time favorite pale aqua.  Throw in some metallic neutrals, a touch of black, and I’m one happy lady!

The original glass of the windows of these old buildings warp over time, creating a wobbley texture…I love it and used to look through it every day in my house on Rutledge Ave.  Now it reminds me of hammered silk….my new fabric obsession!

That’s it for now kids!

Happily Yours,
